On this tour, you will embark on an unforgettable journey through the breathtaking landscapes of Northern Pakistan. SHANDUR POLO FESTIVAL

The Shandur Polo Festival is a prestigious tradition that has been held annually since 1936, drawing thousands of tourists and locals alike to witness the exhilarating polo matches and cultural events. The festival is held at an elevation of 3,743 meters, making it one of the highest polo grounds in the world and offering a unique experience for visitors. The Shandur Polo Festival features matches between teams from Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral, showcasing a centuries-old rivalry known as the “Game of Kings”. Generations of locals, including the region’s rulers, have embraced this traditional sport, making it an essential aspect of the local culture. The festival offers a platform for these teams to compete against each other, fostering camaraderie and sportsmanship while preserving a centuries-old tradition. Apart from the polo matches, the Shandur Polo Festival also highlights the rich cultural heritage of the region. Tour Plan

Upon arrival in Islamabad Airport, you will be greeted by one of our representatives who will take you to your hotel. Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan, is a well-planned city nestled beneath the Margalla Hills National Park. It is home to several foreign embassies, United Nations Agencies, and international organizations such as the World Bank, and the Asian Development Bank. In this tour, you will explore some of the city’s most famous landmarks and experience the diverse culture and history.  You will begin your tour with a visit to the Institute of Folk Heritage, also known as Lok Virsa, a small ethnological museum showcasing a variety of customs and artifacts from across Pakistan. Next, proceed to the Faysal Mosque, an impressive structure built in the 1970s and once the largest in the world. Visit Margalla Hills to appreciate the stunning views over the city before enjoying dinner at one of the many restaurants in Islamabad. 

Our journey begins early in the morning, as we set out to explore the breathtaking landscapes of the Hazara Expressway and Kaghan Valley. The total travel time for this exciting adventure is approximately 7 hours, with a lunch break to refuel your bodies and minds. Upon reaching Naran, you will check into your hotel, ready to relax and unwind after a day full of awe-inspiring sights and experiences.

We will begin our journey by having an early breakfast and setting out for Gilgit. Our first stop will be Lulusar Lake, a breathtaking alpine lake nestled amidst the picturesque landscape. We will continue our journey and will reach the majestic Babusar Pass, a high mountain pass in the Himalayan Range at an altitude of 4,174 meters above sea level and is usually accessible from June to October. Will reach Chilas and continue travelling on the famous Karakoram Highway towards Gilgit. Stopover at the junction point of the three mountain ranges where the Himalaya, Karkoram and Hindukush ranges meet at one point in Jaglot near Gilgit. You will reach Gilgit and transfer to hotel for night stay. 

This morning, we have the opportunity to delve into the rich history and culture of a classic frontier town, once considered the furthest outpost of the empire. Our adventure will take us through the Chirstian graveyard and Chinese Cemetery and bustling bazaar, before heading north on the Karakoram Highway towards the famed Hunza Valley. As we journey through this breathtaking landscape, we will come across the awe-inspiring Mount Rakaposhi, a testament to the region’s epic beauty. We will take a break for lunch at Rakaposhi View Restaurant, where we can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. Upon our arrival in the picturesque town of Karimabad, we will be captivated by the mountains that envelop the area and the laid-back atmosphere of this charming destination. The location where we will be staying for the night is positioned at an elevation of 2,850 meters above sea level. From this viewpoint, you'll be treated to awe-inspiring panoramic vistas of five majestic peaks towering over 7,000 meters, guaranteeing an unforgettable experience throughout your stay.

Today we start our day with waking up early to witness the breathtaking sight of Rakaposhi peak turning flamingo pink as the sun rises. After breakfast, we will head to the other side of the valley to explore the Hoper Glacier. A picturesque lunch will be enjoyed at a garden café before driving to the newly formed lake at Attabad. The tour continues to Gulmit, where we can witness the carpet weaving center run by Wakhi women. Finally, the group will drive further north to the Batura Glacier and enjoy the stunning views of Passu Cones, Passu Glacier, and 7000m peaks. The day concludes with a return to Karimabad in the late afternoon. 

After having a delicious breakfast, we will visit Baltit Fort located in Karimabad, Hunza. This historic fort has been beautifully restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, showcasing its rich cultural heritage. Baltit Fort is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which highlights its significance and importance in the region. We will take a break for lunch in town. After refueling, those who are interested can embark on a water channel walk around Karimabad. This walk offers a unique opportunity to witness the local culture and landscape while enjoying a leisurely stroll. In the afternoon, we will have some free time to explore the local shops in Karimabad. This is an excellent chance to buy souvenirs and experience the local craftsmanship. Café’ De Hunza is a popular spot to enjoy the best coffee and walnut cake in town, offering a delightful treat for those who wish to take a break from shopping.

After breakfast, we will begin our journey back to Gilgit and travel towards the Ghizer Valley. This stunning valley is nestled within the towering mountains of the northern region of Pakistan. The drive to Ghizer Valley is an inspiring experience, as it takes us through some of the most dramatic and beautiful landscapes the country has to offer. The region is rich in cultural heritage, with ancient forts, monasteries, and traditional villages that showcase the unique history and traditions of the people who lives here.  

After breakfast, we will embark on a picturesque journey to the Shandur Pass. Along the way, we will stop at the last village of Barsat, where we will alight and walk across the breathtaking Langer or flat plain. This area is home to local shepherds who graze their yaks, cattle, donkeys, and sheep, adding a unique touch to the landscape. Upon reaching the top of the stunning Shandur Pass, we will be greeted by the stunning meadows. These designated spots will be our camping grounds for the next two nights, enabling us to completely immerse ourselves in the festival ambiance. A camp crew will be on hand to set up tents and assemble the mess and toilet tent, ensuring our comfort throughout our stay. One of the main highlights of our time at Shandur Pass will be the opportunity to watch high-paced polo matches. Set against the unmatched backdrop of the Shandur Pass, this exhilarating sport exemplifies the passion and vibrancy that polo adds to Pakistan. As we enjoy these exhilarating matches, we will be surrounded by the stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

The spectacle of polo matches being played at a frenetic pace in the festival atmosphere is a sight to behold. These contests showcase the athleticism and skill of the players, who compete in a high-energy environment filled with excitement and cheering. The lively atmosphere of the festival adds to the overall enjoyment, creating an unforgettable experience for spectators. The combination of the exhilarating polo matches, the festival atmosphere and the magical location create a one-of-a-kind experience for all who attended. The additional activities on offer only serve to enhance the event, ensuring that guests leave with cherished memories and a renewed appreciation for the sport of polo.

The drive through the Mastuj Valley, Boni Zong, Tirich Mir, and Yarkhun Valley is a breathtaking experience that showcases the beauty and drama of the region this journey will take you through some of the most picturesque landscapes, offering a chance to explore the culture and history of the area. Will reach Chitral in the evening.

Following breakfast, we will drive into the Kalash Valley of Rumbor village. This is an extensive day of travel, and we will not arrive at our hotel in the city until the evening, allowing us to rest and recuperate after a long day of driving. After lunch, we will have the opportunity to interact with the Kalash people and take leisurely walks around the village. 

Today, we take advantage of our time in the valley to enjoy the beautiful scenery and experience the warm hospitality of the local people. Our morning walk will lead us towards the Afghan border, where we can visit small villages and interact with the locals. Will have lunch, and those interested can join an optional walk around the valley to better understand the lifestyle of the Kalash people. Alternatively, you may choose to relax in the village and soak in the atmosphere.

Later in the day, we will embark on a journey to Ayun/Chitral.  We will explore the village, walks to gain a deeper understanding of the local culture. These walks offer an immersive experience and provide valuable insights into the daily life of the people in this region.

Today, we will embark on the final leg of our journey, setting out very early in the morning to drive through the Lowari Tunnel and across the frontier, ultimately heading towards Islamabad. This is an extensive day travel, and we will not arrive at our hotel in the city until the evening, allowing us to rest and recapture after a long day of driving.

Today, we will begin our day with a leisurely start and then embark on a short journey to Taxila to delve into the rich history of this captivating Buddhist University Town, which dates back to the Gandharan era during Alexander the Great’s time. After our exploration, we will make our way back to Islamabad.

In conclusion, the tour’s end after breakfast and the subsequent departure of the group flight marks the successful completion of a-once-in-a-lifetime adventure. The participants will cherish the memories made during their time exploring the various attractions and forming connections with fellow travelers.
